hello everybody.

well, i’m back in namibia. i had a good trip. the highlight was probably staying in a cheap hotel in johannesburg with a poster on the wall that said

SOAP
it’s all you need

(big picture of
soap)

available at the
front desk for R0.80

R0.80 is about US0.08, so if soap really is all you need then you’re in pretty good shape..

My return trip involved 4 airplanes, a train ride, and a bus ride. All told, I think I spent roughly 40 hours on planes or in buses, and another day or so waiting in terminals and stations. Amsterdam is a great place to spend a few hours on the way back to Africa. Not only do you up the number of continents recently touched by one, but there’s also a casino and (it seemed like) a bunch more stuff that I didn’t really make it to.

It’s also cool to fly down the length of the African continent. It was cloudy on the northern part, but the middle was just as dark as they say. The Nile is big.

I had a great time in the US and Hong Kong. It was really good to see many friends and find out how everyone is doing. I really enjoyed the time with people and feel nice and relaxed.

I have regular email access here now, so feel free to stay in touch that way. If you want to call, my cell phone number expired while I was gone, so you can call Kristin’s land line by dialing 011-264-63-283-972 . When I get a new cell phone number or the old one re-instated I will let you know on here.

Kristin’s doing ok. She’s had a few rough things happen (she saw a person hit by a semi truck on the highway and her 12th grade host sister died) in the past few days, but she seems to be coping OK. It’s not an easy life she has here.

The place Kristin had lined up for me to live didn’t work out, but things look good for finding a place. There’s a house across the street from where Kristin lives that has a garage apartment that I might be able to get. Then, a few more houses away there’s another one that’s much bigger and nicer. The first one would cost about US$15 a month, and the second around US$80, so both would be pretty reasonable.

I met someone yesterday who’s trying to start a youth center in town, and am going to try to help him write some grant proposals and shop them around. It kind of just fell in my lap, but seems like a good start to things here. I haven’t been able to catch up to the butcher shop guy yet, so I’m not hacking meat yet. I will.
